Unless you have been living under a rock, you probably know that Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, married former American actress Meghan Markle (now Duchess of Sussex) in a Givenchy gown this past summer. She looked stunning, wearing another simplistic gown by Stella McCartney, and her veil was 16 feet long and featured commonwealth flower embroidery, an absolutely gorgeous touch. I saw a ton of footage about it, read about it, and stayed tuned due to my American love of the royal family (I am obsessed with Kate Middleton’s style), but somehow I didn’t realize Princess Eugenie of York (the daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah, Duchess of York) was married in a stunning Peter Pilotto & Christopher de Vos dress on October 12, 2018! How did I miss this gorgeous look? To make sure you never miss out on some of the world’s most unique and stunning royal wedding gowns (like I did), here is a non-exhaustive list of some the most gorgeous royal gowns of the 20th and 21st century.
Princess Sofia of Sweden, Duchess of Varmland’
The former model and reality star wed Prince Carl Phillip of Sweden in a silk organza and crepe wedding gown created by Swedish designer Ida Sjöstedt. Our ‘Ruth’ gown has a few style differences, but the lace covered shoulders and low back in a winter white mimics the classic style of Sofia’s gown.
Franziska Balzer
The former actress married Prince Maximilian of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (not pictured here) in Germany back in 2016. Franziska wore a very unconventional for a royal sheer bodice with a soft a-line skirt and separate cropped jacket. Our Ronelle dress features a similar feature in its sheer bodice back and unique bridal feel.
Cleopatra von Adelsheim von Ernest
This former German actress married Prince Franz Albrecht zu Oettingen-Spielberg in Adelsheim, Germany in a retro-inspired a-line gown with floral embroidery and full sleeves, recalling the retro style of Princess Caroline of Monaco’s 70s inspired dress. Our ‘Aunna’ dress captures the retro look of dramatic bell sleeves.
Lady Charlotte Wellesley
This stunning bride wore a structured, off-the-shoulder Emilia Wickstead gown for her 2016 nuptials to financier Alejandro Santo Domingo. Any of our gowns could be made in a similarly stunning textured fabric, but our ‘Isabelle’ gown in its unique organza fabric and very princess-like silhouette is a great way to look like royalty.
Beatrice Borromeo
Italian’s societal royalty, Beatrice Borromeo wed Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco’s grandson, Pierre Casiraghi in 4 different gowns, including this stunning, goddess-like Valentino gown (possibly my favorite royal wedding dress ever). Our lovely ‘Genevieve’ dress captures the same mythological beauty in a unique full lace design.
Mabel Wisse Smit
This unique dress created by Viktor and Rolf was worn in Mabel’s wedding to Prince Johan Friso of the Netherlands in 2004 (not pictured here). There were 248 bows on the entire dress, showcasing this bride’s unique style. While we don’t have as many bows, our Zoe dress uses its use of one bow at the waist beautifully.
Princess Noor of Jordan
This stunningly intricate full lace gown was worn by Princess Noor’s wedding to Prince Hamzah bin Hussein of Jordan. This lovely dress full dress lace and traditional silhouette can be replicated in any of our full lace gowns, especially our gorgeous ‘Whitney’ gown.
Princess Maria Theresia von Thurn
This style is truly unique among royal wedding dresses. Princess Maria Theresia von Thurn wed Hugo Wilson in a dress adorned with painted gold roses. We love the pop of unexpected color, as is shown in our amazing ‘Lydia’ gown.
Soraya Esfandiary - Bakhtiary
This dress is one of the most extravagant royal wedding dresses due to its 37 yards of silver lame with pearls, diamonds, and feathers. Soraya married the Shah of Iran in this amazing Christian Dior creation, forever inspiring wedding designers everywhere. Our extravagant ‘Georgia’ gown captures the luxury of Soraya in its crystal bodice and tiers of flouncy tulle.
There are plenty more royal wedding dresses we haven’t mentioned; let us know if you are interested in reading about more! Thanks for reading!
